Today we remember Martyr Varus, a military commander in Egypt who secretly helped persecuted Christians, and the seven monastic martyrs who were executed with him. We also commemorate the translation of the relics of Venerable John, Abbot of Rila in Bulgaria, and honor Hieromartyr Sadoc, Bishop of Persia, and 128 martyrs who suffered with him. Additionally, we recall the Prophet Joel, who foretold the coming of the Holy Spirit and the desolation of Jerusalem. Though little is known about Venerable Prochorus of Pcinja, he is also remembered on this day.
