Marty Mauser is a New York shoe salesman and one of America's finest table tennis players — broke, perpetually self-sabotaging, and chasing the 1952 World Championship in Tokyo against every obstacle he manufactures for himself. His London tournament run puts him in the orbit of Béla Kletzki, an Auschwitz survivor whom the sport kept alive, and ends in a disputed final loss to an unranked deaf Japanese player named Koto Endo.
