Marriage & Medicine is a podcast about love, partnership, and navigating life in and around medicine. Hosted by Calicia & Carter, the show shares honest conversations about marriage, medical training, faith, family, and the realities that don’t always make it into the highlight reel. Some episodes were recorded earlier in our journey and shared later, as life allowed us to slow down, grow, and step into this season intentionally. If you’re in medicine, love someone in medicine, or are simply curious about the life behind the path, you’re welcome here. Follow the show to join the conversation!Calicia and Carter Cunningham 社会科学

  • Dr. Emilio and Dr. Marissa Benbassat | Married to Another ER Doctor
    2026/09/01

Dr. Emilio and Marissa Benbassat join Marriage & Medicine to talk about what it's actually like to be married to someone who does exactly what you do. Both of them are ER doctors, and the answer is more complicated than people probably assume.

They talk through how they got here, meeting in medical school in the Caribbean, doing part of it long distance, getting through COVID in the middle of that, and eventually matching into the same specialty. Which means instead of one of them coming home from a shift and trying to explain it to someone who's never lived it, they're both just in it, together, all the time.

Now they're new parents on top of two ER schedules, and a lot of this episode is them being honest about what that actually looks like day to day. Understanding each other's work doesn't automatically make life easier. It just means the hard parts are shared instead of explained.

If you're married to someone in medicine, thinking about it, or just curious what it's like when both people in a marriage do the same demanding job, this one's for you.

  • Dr. Janet Kerrigan: The Letter That Got Carter Into Medical School
    2026/09/01

Dr. Janet Kerrigan joins Marriage & Medicine to share the story behind the letter that helped get Carter into medical school, and the road she walked to become the kind of doctor who could write it.

Dr. Kerrigan completed her Family Practice residency in the U.S. Navy and is board certified in family medicine. She came up in medicine at a time when the system was not built with women in mind, and this episode gets into what that actually looked like: what she had to push through, what she had to prove twice as often, and what it took to build a career in medicine and in the military when very little of it was designed for her to succeed. By the time Carter came along and she saw something in him worth vouching for, she was writing that letter from decades of having had to earn her own place first.

Carter shares a glimpse of his own path through the Army's HPSP scholarship, from committing to service before he'd even started medical school to now completing his residency at JBLM under that same commitment. Hearing her story next to his gives the conversation a full-circle thread, two very different eras of military medicine, one letter connecting them.

If you are in medicine, know someone who had to fight for a seat at the table, or are curious what military medicine looked like a generation ago versus now, we hope this conversation encourages you.

  • Bonus: Life Update
    2026/03/03

    We’re hitting the "fast-forward" button! ⏩

While we’ve been sharing our journey consistently, this bonus episode jumps the timeline a bit to bring you exactly where we are today. We filmed this "tagup" about a month ago to bridge the gap between our pregnancy episodes and our new reality as parents.

Heads up: You’ll still hear us referencing our old name in this clip! We wanted to share this raw update as it happened, name change and all.

    In this tagup:

    • From pregnancy to postpartum: The transition.

    • Why we're jumping ahead in the story.

    • A final nod to 'Married to Medicine' as we move forward.

Thanks for following the journey, even when the timeline gets a little wild!
