Dear readers, the Gospel of Mark opens its door proclaiming “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God”. Here we must first of all look back at who we believe Jesus to be. Do you know Jesus only as a great teacher or as One who heals the sick? Or do you believe in Him as the Son of God, who took upon Himself all your sins and accomplished perfect salvation? The gospel that the Gospel of Mark delivers is not a moving story about Jesus, but the power of God, by which a sinner receives the remission of sins and eternal life.

The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels of the New Testament, and yet the book with the quickest breath. The person who reads this Gospel feels a vividness, as though he were following the footsteps of Jesus breathlessly across the fields and along the lakeshore of Galilee. Yet the person who left this powerful and concise Gospel in our hands was, surprisingly, not one of the twelve apostles. The long tradition of the early church uniformly points to a young man called ‘John Mark’ as the author of this Gospel. He did not belong to the band of Jesus’ immediate disciples, but he was a man who, at the side of the Apostle Peter, heard his preaching and faithfully wrote down that testimony. In this first question we look at who the author of this book is, and why the early church acknowledged him as the author so unwaveringly.

Mark chapter 1 proclaims “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1), and it is the chapter that shows how the public ministry of Jesus began. First, John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins and preparing the way of the Lord. He testifies that One mightier than he is coming, and that this One will baptize with the Holy Spirit. Jesus comes from Nazareth of Galilee and is baptized by John the Baptist. When He comes up from the water, the heavens are parted and the Spirit descends on Him like a dove, and a voice from heaven declares that Jesus is the beloved Son of God. Then the Holy Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness, and Jesus is tempted by Satan for forty days.

Mark chapter 1 shows Jesus Christ, the Son of God, beginning His ministry on this earth to save sinners. John the Baptist made people realize their sins and prepared the way of the Lord so that they would return to Jesus. Jesus took on all the sins of mankind with the baptism He received from John the Baptist, received the judgment of those sins on the Cross, and then rose again, and so accomplished perfect salvation. God the Father and the Holy Spirit testified that Jesus is the beloved Son of God and the true Savior.

Today we have read together Mark chapter 1, verses 1 through 8. The Gospel of Mark opens with the words, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” How the gospel of Jesus Christ, that is, the gospel of the water and the Spirit, begins—this Mark makes plain across verses 2 through 5. He first quotes the words of the prophet Isaiah and of Malachi 3:1, and delivers, “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You. The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.’”
