In Mark 9:14–50, Jesus comes down from the transfiguration to find His disciples powerless before a boy seized by an unclean spirit. The real enemy is not the demon but unbelief. That unbelief is broken when the father cries, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Jesus then shows what it means to be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God (Rom. 12:1)—seasoned with fire and salt. Discipleship means dying to selfish ambition by becoming last and servant of all, dying to self-importance that divides those who serve in Jesus’ name, and waging war on the lusts of the body. The calling is hard, but we are not left without power: we have the weapon of prayer.
