In Mark 8:11–38, the Pharisees demand a sign from heaven while shutting their eyes to all Jesus is doing. Jesus warns His disciples against the leaven of that willful unbelief, then heals a blind man in two stages—first seeing men like trees walking, then seeing clearly—as a living picture of the disciples’ still-blurry faith. Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, yet cannot accept a suffering Messiah and is rebuked. Jesus teaches that anyone who would follow Him must deny himself and take up his cross. The disciples’ vision is made clear only when they behold the risen Lord; the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the light that brings all into focus.
