Through Mark 15, Jesus willingly took the punishment meant for others—standing in the place of Barabbas and all who would believe. The torn curtain of the temple revealed that mercy, once restricted to the high priest alone, is now accessible to everyone through Jesus' sacrifice. The sermon calls us to recognize what Jesus did for us personally and to respond by turning from sin, never forgetting the mercy we've been given through Calvary.
This week we concluded our journey through the book of Mark with a powerful look at Mark 15 — the arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus. The central question woven throughout the entire message was both simple and deeply personal: Did you know it was for you?
From the moment Jesus was handed over to Pilate, everything He had taught and done began to come to its fullest expression. He wasn't building an earthly kingdom — He was building one rooted in redemption. Though He could have declared Himself king before the crowds, He had no need for an earthly title. He already was the King of Kings.
One of the most striking moments came in reflecting on Barabbas — whose name literally means "Son of the Father." A guilty man walked free while an innocent Jesus stayed. That image is the gospel in a single scene. Jesus stood in the place someone else deserved to stand, and He did it willingly.
From the torn curtain that opened access to God's mercy for all people, to the Roman centurion who — after witnessing the crucifixion — declared Jesus the Son of God, Mark 15 is filled with people encountering the power of Christ, often without fully realizing it.
The invitation this week was clear: Jesus didn't stay dead. His mercy is new every morning, and it is available to all who call on His name — including you.
