In Mark 10:17–52, Jesus is on the road to Jerusalem—to the cross. Along the way three encounters show who truly follows Him. The rich young ruler runs to Jesus and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus loves him and calls him to sell all, take up the cross, and follow—not to make poverty the rule, but to leave worldly Egypt for the greater riches of a better Kingdom. James and John then ask for seats at His right and left in glory, treating Christ as a means to power. Jesus answers that His kingdom is an economy of service: life is found in giving ourselves away, as the Son of Man came not to be served but to give His life. Finally Bartimaeus, a blind beggar with nothing to commend himself, cries out for mercy, receives his sight, and follows Jesus on the road. The first will be last and the last first. We bring nothing but our sin and a plea for mercy; having our eyes opened, we follow Him as trophies of His grace.
