I wrote a song about the bench.

Forty three years of it. The cases nobody sees, the hours nobody bills, the decisions you make when there's nobody left in the building to ask. I put it to music, and then I built a video around it frame by frame, and it took a lot longer than I want to admit.

This episode is that video.

It's not about a patient, though there's one in it. It's not really about me either, though my hands are all over it. It's about what happens to everything you learn if you never hand it to anybody.

There's a moment in the middle where I'm working an arch, and I set the handpiece down, and the bench sits empty for a second, and then a younger pair of hands picks the work up and keeps going. One shot. No cut. That's the whole song right there.

The line that started all of it was take the hours, take all of them. I meant that for the tech coming up behind me. Not for a course, not for a fee.

You see it every day if you're looking. Somebody at your bench who's stuck on something you solved fifteen years ago.

For twenty-two episodes I sat in this room by myself. Not this one.

Minh Tran worked at my bench. Then he didn't. Episode 13 was about what that felt like from my side, and I never used his name.

I'm using it now.

There was no falling out. No betrayal. Nobody to blame. That did not make the bench feel any less empty.

For years I thought I knew what the future of Sunrise Dental Laboratory looked like, and Minh was in that picture. I had watched him from a distance, brought him into the lab, handed him work I would not hand most people, and somewhere in there I started imagining he might carry a piece of what I built. Then he went home to Windsor and built his own.

We go back to the beginning in this one. His path into dental technology, becoming an RDT, the online conversations that connected us years before either of us met in person, and the decision to come work beside me in Southern California.

Then we get into the part that actually matters. What he learned from me, and what he had to unlearn. What it felt like to know he needed to leave while knowing exactly what that would cost on my end. And whether a man has to build something of his own before he can understand what owning a laboratory really is.

Minh is honest about the gap between being a good technician and being a good lab owner. The pressure of saying yes. Earning your own stripes instead of borrowing somebody else's. Finding out that some of the things a mentor tells you don't land until years later, usually at the worst possible moment.

And we get at something neither of us can define cleanly. What survives after the bench goes empty.

The standards. The skepticism. The extra one percent nobody sees and nobody pays for. The instinct to verify instead of assume. The friendship.

There's one thing we don't agree on. We left it that way.

This isn't an episode about somebody leaving a laboratory. It's about what happens when the future you pictured doesn't show up, and what you find out you actually built.

There was a bar on my bench at five in the morning that three people had already given up on. The note said: take it all out, start over.

Nobody asked if there was another way. Because for them, there wasn't. You can't offer a path you've never walked.

This one goes back to where I started, removable prosthetics, the attachment era, the toolbox most of the trade quietly stopped filling. Not as nostalgia. As the reason I could look at a case everyone else saw one way and hand the doctor three.

Good, better, best. What that actually sounds like on the phone. Why the default is the enemy. And why the most valuable thing you'll do all week is the thing that never shows up on the invoice.
