There were two stories in the London market this week, pulling in opposite directions.
On tax, the net widened: the Chancellor is reported to be considering a cut to the mansion tax threshold to £1.5m. down from the £2m first floated, more than doubling the number of homes caught. Beneath the headlines, the frozen inheritance-tax nil-rate band continues to pull more estates into charge as values rise.
On the market, a clear split. Prime central London now sits around 26% below its last peak, and The Times reports British buyers stepping back in to take advantage, while the BBC notes that 88% of inner-London flats listed last year failed to find a buyer within six months. Scarce prime houses hold firm; leasehold flats stall.
The thread throughout: tax and tenure now matter as much as postcode.
