What is the Book of Malachi really about?

And what does Malachi's prophecy about the “Day of the Lord” have to do with John the Baptist and Jesus?

In this lesson on the Book of Malachi, we examine Malachi's message in its historical setting, around 430 BC, following the events recorded in Ezra and Nehemiah. We then trace one of Malachi's major themes: the Day of the Lord—the time when God visits His people in both blessing and judgment.

Malachi 3 and 4 point forward to the coming of God's messenger and the coming of the Lord Himself. We consider how the prophecy concerning Elijah is fulfilled in John the Baptist and how Malachi's promises ultimately point us to Jesus Christ.

The lesson also explores an important principle for interpreting Scripture: we must understand biblical words and prophecies in the historical and literary context in which they were originally given. From Malachi's original audience, through Christ's first coming, to the final Day of the Lord when Christ returns, we see how God's promises unfold across Scripture.
