Make Peace With Life Shortcast #021 – You Are Not Broken
You are not broken.
In this episode of the Make Peace With Life Shortcast, we talk about something many of us need to hear from time to time: just because you make mistakes, struggle, have insecurities, or want to improve yourself doesn't mean there is something wrong with you. It means you're human.
We live in a world that constantly tries to convince us that we need to be fixed. There is a lot of money to be made by making people feel inadequate. Fashion, education, success, beauty, health, social media, advertising and influencers can all send the same message: You're not enough yet — but here's something you can buy, change or become that will finally fix you.
Insecurity can be incredibly effective marketing.
There always seems to be another product, program, trend or person ready to tell us what we need to change about ourselves.
But what if you stopped believing that message?
There is nothing wrong with wanting to grow.
You can improve yourself while still appreciating the person you already are. Self-improvement should expand who you are, not become an endless attempt to transform yourself into somebody else.
You can make mistakes.
You can have struggles.
You can have things you want to improve.
You can have bad days.
None of those things automatically mean you're broken.
Your value is already inside you. The challenge is recognizing it, developing it and being willing to share it with the world.
It's easy to create a mental list of everything we don't like about ourselves.
What if we started putting just as much energy into recognizing what's right?
Look at your positive traits. Think about the things you've overcome, the people you've helped, the things you've learned and the qualities that make you uniquely you.
If your positive self-image has taken a beating, start rebuilding it.
Stop constantly comparing yourself to other people. Learn to accept compliments instead of immediately dismissing them. Spend more time around your tribe — the people who appreciate, encourage and support the person you actually are.
And pay attention to the way you talk to yourself.
Look at yourself in the mirror and say something positive.
It may feel strange at first, but that's part of the point.
Instead of immediately noticing the things you'd like to change, identify something you appreciate about yourself. It could be something physical, something about your personality, an accomplishment, your sense of humor, your kindness, your persistence or simply the fact that you keep showing up.
Your inner conversation matters.
You don't have to pretend you're perfect.
You don't have to stop growing.
You simply need to remember that growth and being broken are not the same thing.
Maybe you don't need to become somebody completely different.
Maybe you simply need to rediscover the value in the person who's already there.
