Before he became the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, Major Somnath Sharma was a son, a brother, a soldier, and a young officer serving a newly independent India.
In November 1947, as danger approached Srinagar, Major Sharma and his men were ordered to hold their position at Badgam. Outnumbered and under intense pressure, he chose to remain with his soldiers when withdrawal could have meant survival.
