Magic Slim: Raw Chicago Blues, Uncompromised
Meet Morris Holt—the tall, slim Mississippian who became Magic Slim and kept postwar Chicago blues roaring into the 21st century. Born to sharecroppers in 1937, he lost a finger in a cotton gin at 14 and switched from piano to guitar. Named by childhood friend Magic Sam, he returned to Chicago in the mid-1960s, took over the Teardrops, and built one of the fiercest, most uncompromising bands on the South Side.
This episode traces his journey from Delta juke joints to Florence’s Lounge, the Blind Pig years, an encyclopedic live repertoire, and a surprising move to Lincoln, Nebraska. Hear the story of his distinctive bare-finger slide, the six-time Blues Band of the Year Teardrops, and a career that refused to soft-pedal or chase trends.
Raw. Gritty. Unfiltered. The last real Chicago blues band, still body-slamming audiences long after the man himself was gone.
