God warns us not to covet what belongs to our neighbor. This final commandment looks past our outward actions straight into our hidden desires. It exposes the restless human heart that always wants more. When we chase after other things, whether intentional or not, we put those things before God. This greed disintegrates our trust in the Lord and behaves as a hidden form of idolatry. In essence, the tenth command brings us right back to the very first command and it calls us to love God alone as our ultimate treasure and provision.

As we begin our new series based on the study "3 Big Questions," we will discuss how we live in a world constantly telling us who we should be, and so one of the most important questions we can ask is, “Who am I?” Our identity can be shaped by comparison, accomplishments, failures, relationships, appearance, and social media—but Genesis 1:27 takes us back to where our identity truly begins: “God created mankind in his own image.” Before we achieved anything, failed, or heard anyone’s opinion of us, God gave us our identity by creating us in His image. When we know whose image we bear, we can begin to understand who we really are.

The world is constantly asking, What do you do? What are you good at? Where are you going? How successful are you? What have you accomplished? But before God asks you to do anything, He wants you to know who you are. Ephesians 1:3–5 reminds us that in Christ, you are blessed, chosen, loved, and adopted. Your identity isn't something you have to earn—it is something God gives. Your grades can change. Your career can change. Your relationships can change. Your circumstances can change. Even your failures can change the way you see yourself. But this doesn't change: You are God's. Before Jesus gave Peter an assignment, He gave him an identity. Before God gave Moses an assignment, He reminded Moses WHO his identity was attached to. Before you ever accomplish anything for God, you need to know that you belong to God.

When Jesus arrived on the scene, something amazing happened. It was a transitional period where the spiritual God arrived in a physical Being. Hebrews 1:3 emphasizes that the whole essence of God was found in the character and heart of Jesus. Grace and Truth were put on display, an exactness for us to use as a pattern of God’s goodness. But perhaps the greatest blessing in all of this, was the invitation to be a part of His forever family. Notice in our scripture reading this morning that there is room for all who believe and receive.

When we belong to Christ, we also belong to each other. That’s what makes our spiritual family so important. We have a connection that transcends all other relationships. But with that connection comes some hard work, efforting together to create an environment where we mutually show love and compassion for one another, where we dig deeper into God’s word to teach each other, where we worship God together, and where our actions reveal to the world that we do indeed belong to God and each other.

The Ninth Commandment, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16), calls God's people to protect both the truth and others' reputations. In 1 Kings 21, Ahab's selfish desire and Jezebel's use of false witnesses to condemn Naboth reveal how violating this commandment destroys innocent lives and corrupts an entire community. The false witness and mischaracterization of Naboth challenge us to recognize that bearing false witness isn't limited to outright lies; it also includes gossip, half-truths, slander, assumptions, and any words that cause others to believe what may not be true. God calls His people to be guardians of truth who love their neighbors enough to protect their dignity and reputation. Today we will discuss the weight of words and how they impact us and our neighbors.
