A zoo with no staff and a brass plate that reads only Subject One. A tall shape in a neighbor's rose bushes while the news blames an escaped animal. A restricted biology class that ends with a black envelope and a badge.

A second grader brings his new friend to show and tell. And in a Louisiana swamp, a song starts at one in the morning, a little closer every night.

A mute old German plays his viol every night in the highest garret of a street that appears on no map. The student living below thinks it is genius, until he is finally invited up and sees the old man's face while he plays.

H.P. Lovecraft's 1922 story, read in full. He counted it among his best, partly because it never explains what the music is for.

A regular blood donor goes back to the donation center and finds no record of six years of appointments, no phlebotomist named Sandra, and a donor card the clerk can't read. Their veins are turning black and filling back up from the outside.

A neighbor who leaves at 6:47 every Tuesday before the plasma center opens. A roommate who thanks you for how well you sleep with the window open. A girlfriend whose pulse no longer matches her heartbeat. Nobody here is hunted. Everybody is asked to help.
