At 14, Valiant Overcomer walked away from the only world he had ever known. He fled Gloriavale with two of his sisters. The Overcomers were one of the few whānau Māori inside the isolated Christian community. He says they were treated as second class. Valiant recalls what it was like growing up Māori in Gloriavale, and the moment he chose to leave. He speaks about reconnecting with his reo and whakapapa, and why, despite everything, he has not turned his back on the community he was raised in.
