• Preface
    2026/09/03

To open the Gospel of Luke is not merely to read an old religious document. It is to hear what God has done in history to save sinners, and to receive and believe the gospel of the water and the Spirit that Jesus Christ completed as the word of salvation for me. Luke Luke, as a disciple of Jesus, carefully examined from the very beginning the testimony handed down by the eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, and then and the ministers of the word had handed down, and then recorded in order what Jesus Christ did and taught. The Gospel of Luke is not a book that rests the ground of salvation on religious feelings or human effort; it is the word that calls us to know and believe the salvation God actually accomplished.

  • 01_General Introduction
    2026/09/03

The author of the Gospel of Luke is Luke, who was a Gentile physician. Within the text of this Gospel there appears no passage where the author directly reveals his own name. Yet from the early Church down to today, the Church has consistently confessed the author of this book to be Luke, and that confession is by no means a groundless conjecture. The internal evidence the text itself contains, the inseparable continuity with the Acts of the Apostles, and the united testimony of the early Church fathers interlock with one another and plainly reveal that this Gospel came from the hand of Luke. Confirming the author is not a matter of mere academic curiosity. It is precious because it is the starting point for understanding with what eyes and what heart this Gospel testifies of Jesus Christ.

  • Ch01_01_Biblical Exposition_Luke Chapter 1 seen from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit
    2026/09/03

In Luke chapter 1, the promises of the Old Testament and their fulfillment appear in many scenes. God promised to send John the Baptist, who would prepare the way of the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah; to cause Jesus Christ, who would inherit the throne of David, to be born of a virgin; and to shine the light of the remission of sins according to the covenant He had made with Abraham. Luke chapter 1 testifies that those promises are not notions or myths but facts that began to be fulfilled within history.

  • Ch01_02_Questions and Answers on Luke Chapter 1
    2026/09/03

As I travel to many places and meet people, I see that even while living in an age of material abundance, people are severely famished. There are many who wander about in severe famine and thirst, wondering how they might get even a cup of water to drink. Though they are rich physically, their souls are so poor; I see so very many souls wandering at the point of death and dying of famine. Some want to eat this food but cannot, while we eat the word of God every day—we are truly blessed people.

  • Ch01_04_Sermon_Live a life of faith that believes the word, not a life of religion (Luke 1:1-19)
    2026/09/03

This week we celebrate Christmas. Whenever Christmas comes around, we tend to be gripped by the obsessive thought that we must celebrate it, that we must prepare a play. But putting our hearts into it is more important than doing better than others. I hear that these days churches practice their plays as if competing with one another. Rather than striving to do better than others, however, it is more important to receive good lessons and teaching this Christmas and to build up our faith firmly. Rather than being bound by obsessive thoughts, I hope this will be a Christmas in which we think again of the grace of the Lord who came to us, and examine and strengthen our faith.

  • Ch01_05_Sermon_Concerning the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:8-19)
    2026/09/03

The word records the birth of John the Baptist. John the Baptist was a man of a priestly family belonging to the order of Aaron. His father was Zacharias, a man who carried out the priest’s duties before God. Since there were many priests, lots were drawn according to the custom of the priesthood, and the one chosen by lot went into the temple of the Lord that year and burned incense before God.

Writing and leaving documents behind is tremendously hard work. A first draft is, as the word says, only a draft; you must keep going into a second and a third revision. Not even two or three writings out of a hundred come out right at one writing; all the rest must be gone over twice and three times. So there is no need to be disappointed and troubled that a first draft was not adopted. When you write, first you gather and put in everything that must go in; second, you adjust where and how strongly to say it; third, you must see whether there is anything that could be faulted; and even after doing all that, you must go over it again.
