Who is Jesus really? In Luke 9, Peter, James, and John get a glimpse of the answer when Jesus is transfigured before them and his glory is revealed in a way they had never seen before.
In this episode of the PursueGOD Podcast, we explore the Transfiguration of Christ in Luke 9:28-36 and why this moment is so important for understanding the true identity of Jesus. The disciples had already watched Jesus teach with authority, heal the sick, calm storms, and perform miracles. But on the mountain, they saw something more: Jesus wasn’t simply a prophet, teacher, or miracle worker. His divine glory was unveiled before their eyes.
Moses and Elijah also appear alongside Jesus, representing the Law and the Prophets of the Old Testament. Their presence points to a major biblical truth: the entire story of Scripture ultimately points to Jesus. As they speak with him about his coming “exodus”—his death and resurrection in Jerusalem—it becomes clear that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s rescue plan.
Peter responds by suggesting they build shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, seemingly placing all three on the same level. But God the Father immediately redirects the focus: “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” When the cloud disappears, Moses and Elijah are gone, and Jesus is standing there alone.
The message of the Transfiguration is simple but powerful: it’s all about Jesus. He is more than a good moral teacher, prophet, life coach, or version of God shaped around our personal preferences. He is the Son of God, the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, and the one we are called to listen to and trust.
