A Texas Ranger investigation is underway after a 50-year-old man, Carlos Francisco Marrero, died by self-inflicted gunshot wound at Buffalo Springs Lake. The incident followed a high-speed chase after Marrero fled a traffic stop, leading troopers and deputies to track him down inside a building. Authorities are still piecing together the events that led to the tragic outcome — a sobering reminder of how quickly situations can spiral out of control.

Lubbock just made a bold move: a six-year firefighter contract with massive pay raises, more hires, and a new 24-on-72-off schedule — positioning the department as top-tier in Texas. Police got a one-year deal too, with similar boosts. The cost? $15M for firefighters, plus $5M for police — but officials say it’s worth it for safety and morale. A new “lateral hiring” strategy will bring in seasoned pros faster. And with these deals locked in, future tax promises are off the table — because public safety is now the priority, and Lubbock’s community is behind it.

Serious Crash in Lubbock Intersection | Lubbock News

Lubbock’s City Council just approved a new budget with a 6.78% property tax hike — a bump they trimmed from an even higher initial proposal — to fund critical safety upgrades and infrastructure improvements. The money will go toward hiring more officers, firefighters, and civilian staff, upgrading equipment, fixing streets, and boosting pay across departments — especially for public safety. While residents will feel the impact, city leaders say it’s a necessary investment to make Lubbock safer and more resilient, starting October 1.

Lubbock’s city council has locked in a property tax hike of $103 for most homeowners to fund new, landmark agreements with police and fire departments — a one-year deal adding 10 officers and a 5% pay raise for cops, plus a historic six-year contract for firefighters focused on mental and physical wellness. The tax increase stems from an extra 3.2 cents per $100 of home value, officially setting the budget and paving the way for critical public safety investments.
