As cooler weather arrives and more anglers turn their attention to fall and winter fishing, boating safety and contingency planning become even more important. In this re-aired conversation, Captain Bart White with Sea Tow explains why every boater should think beyond the fishing and prepare for what can go wrong on the water. From dead batteries and running out of fuel to mechanical failures and changing weather, Bart shares lessons learned from more than two decades responding to boaters in trouble. He also explains the value of a Sea Tow membership, which at the time of the conversation was $249 per year compared with towing costs that can quickly run into the hundreds of dollars.

Captain Bart covers some of the most common problems Sea Tow encounters, including boaters failing to check the weather, running low on fuel, battery problems, and overlooked maintenance. He explains why boaters should file a float plan, keep a GPS and reliable communication tools available, know their exact position, and make sure required safety equipment is ready to use. The conversation also covers practical items such as portable jump boxes, spare belts and fuel filters, extra water pumps, anchors, and other gear that can help prevent a minor problem from becoming an emergency. As temperatures cool and anglers spend more time offshore, the segment is a timely reminder to inspect your boat, review your safety plan, and be prepared before leaving the dock.
