If “knowing God” is real, it won’t stay hidden. We sit with 1 John 2 and the blunt, liberating challenge: those who say they live in God should live as Jesus did. Not by copying first-century details, but by letting our lives take on the shape of Christlike love that moves toward people, tells the truth, serves when it’s inconvenient, and forgives even when it costs us.

We also untangle a trap many Christians fall into: obedience as a checklist. John pushes us toward something deeper, abiding in Christ. Abiding means we don’t try to imitate Jesus from a distance or muscle our way into being “better.” We remain, dwell, and make our home in him, and because God is on the move, that kind of abiding turns into walking. Spiritual maturity isn’t measured by comparison or religious activity; it’s measured by responsiveness. When God says move, how long does it take us to move?

The command to love is “old,” but it’s also “new” because Jesus raises the standard: love one another as I have loved you. We talk about what that looks like in a divided church and a wounded world: confession replacing denial, forgiveness interrupting resentment, service challenging self-protection, and boundaries that protect vulnerable people. Darkness doesn’t fade because we win arguments; it fades when light becomes visible through ordinary, costly obedience.
