The NBA dropped a brutal punishment on the LA Clippers—$30 million, five first-round picks gone, and owner Steve Ballmer suspended for a year—after they were caught violating salary cap rules to land Kawhi Leonard. Meanwhile, Kawhi himself? Just a $700K fine and no suspension, already traded back to Toronto where he’s a champion. Stephen A. Smith called him a “gangster” for playing the system and leaving the mess behind, sparking debate: is he a savvy player or a ruthless schemer? The Clippers now face a decade of rebuilding without draft assets, while Kawhi starts fresh in Toronto, averaging nearly 28 points last season and finishing seventh in MVP voting.

The NBA just dropped a blockbuster penalty on the LA Clippers after uncovering serious salary cap violations tied to Kawhi Leonard. Owner Steve Ballmer faces a $30 million fine and a one-year ban from all league activities, while President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker gets a year suspension without pay for allegedly misleading investigators. Lawrence Frank, President of Basketball Operations, is suspended six months without pay for approving questionable expenses. The franchise also loses five consecutive first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033 and will be under intense league oversight for five years. Commissioner Adam Silver made it clear these punishments are final—unlike the Timberwolves’ case two decades ago—and emphasized the league’s commitment to enforcing rules, even if it hurts fans. Though Silver doesn’t see this as permanent damage, the Clippers now face a long rebuild after already moving on from Kawhi.

Kawhi Leonard’s Clippers chapter is officially over after his trade to Toronto was finalized, closing a saga fueled by cap maneuvering and drama. Stephen A. Smith called him a “gangster” for allegedly breaking rules, blaming others, and walking away with just a $700K fine — a pittance for his stature. The Clippers apologized for their role in the cap scheme, and Kawhi reportedly fired his former agent, Dennis Robertson. Smith blasted the leniency, calling it “a crime,” while acknowledging Kawhi’s clean exit — a rare win for the player amid chaos.
