Salt-stiff cover, pages dry, and a sealed bag fused at the edges - a logbook marked Harrow washed up at Palmetto Reach on January 14th while the boat it belonged to had vanished without a trace. If an EPIRB failed mid-Atlantic and a single forty-to-fifty-foot wave swept a deckhand overboard, how did the vessel and its remaining sailor end up off the predicted search grid?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from the logbook’s discovery to the days Nicole Hamilton spent navigating with only a compass, a shadow and a running Casio G-Shock, asking how currents, a missed EPIRB battery replacement, and a single knockdown changed the search for Harrow.
Person: Nicole Hamilton
Person: Travis Yount
Date: January 11 (knockdown) and January 14 (logbook found)
Location: Palmetto Reach (logbook found)
Equipment: EPIRB with depleted battery
- The logbook was found at Palmetto Reach just after 07:00 on January 14 with its bag edges fused shut.
- Nicole Hamilton was 32 years old and owned a 43-foot sloop named Ardea; she had crossed from the Azores to Beaufort two summers earlier (approx. 2,000 miles).
- Harrow departed Horta on January 5 with a 47-foot ketch and two crew: Nicole (captain) and 26-year-old deckhand Travis Yount.
- On January 11 at approximately 11:40, a single 40-50 foot wave knocked Harrow over more than 90 degrees and Travis disappeared from the cockpit.
- Nicole hit the EPIRB switch within 60 seconds, but the battery, not replaced during the refit, drained to silence within four hours before a rescue aircraft could triangulate a reliable fix.
