概要
A judge found dead in a locked office, a clean coffee mug, and a key ring left in his jacket - details that made the official story impossible to hold. Sixteen years later, a cache of letters exposing a construction fraud resurfaces and forces investigators to ask: who silenced Kent Tate?
In this episode, we outline the timeline from the morning Kent Tate was found through the discovery of his letters and the reopening of the case, showing how a sealed archive and a graduate researcher's curiosity changed everything. What did Tate intend to reveal to the attorney general that made his death so inexplicable?
Person: Kent Tate
Date: April 14, 2003
Location: Courthouse annex office, Calhoun County
Case: Letters documenting an investigation into the Pallard Group
Investigator: Norman Fisher
- Tate was forty-eight years old and an associate judge of the Calhoun County Common Pleas Court for eleven years.
- The final letter to attorney Gerald Stout was written six days before Tate’s body was found and stated he was "frightened but resolved."
- The office door was locked from the inside, the sole window latched, the key ring remained in Tate’s jacket pocket, and the coffee mug on the desk was clean and dry.
- Gerald Stout died in 2018; his files were donated to Bridgeway University and left uncatalogued until 2019.
- Graduate researcher Abby Simms found fourteen letters from 2001-2003 in the donated files, which led the university to notify the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and cold-case investigator Norman Fisher.
