  • 5 Parkinson’s Bathroom Problems Nobody Warned You About
    2026/10/16

Let’s talk about the glamorous side of Parkinson’s.

And by glamorous, I mean planning your entire morning around whether your bowels are going to cooperate, or wondering where the nearest bathroom is before you even leave the house.

Because Parkinson’s isn't just tremors, stiffness, and medication schedules.

Sometimes it's constipation, bladder urgency, embarrassing moments, and the fear of losing control when you're out in public.

And nobody really prepares you for that part.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we're talking about five bathroom problems that many people with Parkinson’s quietly struggle with:

    • Constipation: Why it can affect your comfort, energy, digestion, and even how reliably your medication works

    • Bladder urgency: When a simple trip to Costco becomes a military operation involving bathroom locations and emergency planning

    • Medication and bathroom timing: When your pills, stomach, bladder, and bowels all seem to be operating on completely different schedules

    • The embarrassment and shame: Why bathroom problems can make you feel vulnerable and reluctant to talk about what you're experiencing

    • Losing independence: How fear of accidents or unpredictable bathroom needs can slowly make your world smaller

And yes, we're going to laugh about some of it.

Because if I can't laugh at Parkinson’s occasionally, I'm going to start charging it rent. 😂

But underneath the humor is something serious.

Bathroom problems aren't just physical. They can affect your confidence, independence, relationships, and willingness to leave the house.

You'll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen reminds care partners that sometimes the most helpful response isn't advice or reassurance.

    It's simply asking:

“Okay, how can we make this easier?”

Because Parkinson’s already asks enough of us.

We don't need embarrassment and silence making it harder.

  • 3 Bizarre Parkinson’s Discoveries: A Wearable Tail, Depression & Poop Transplants | WHO KNEW?
    2026/10/15

A Parkinson’s medication that might help depression. A wearable tail invented by two teenagers. And doctors transplanting WHAT?!

Just when you think Parkinson’s research couldn't possibly get any stranger, science finds another way to surprise us.

Welcome to Part Two of WHO KNEW? Week, where we explore three fascinating Parkinson’s discoveries that sound almost too bizarre to be real.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we talk about:

    • Pramipexole and depression: Why researchers are studying whether this Parkinson’s medication may also help with depression symptoms, reminding us that Parkinson’s affects much more than movement.

    • A wearable tail for balance: How two Calgary teenagers developed an inventive wearable device inspired by animal tails, exploring whether it could help people with Parkinson’s maintain balance and potentially reduce falls.

    • Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT): Yes, we're talking about poop transplants! Researchers are investigating whether transferring carefully screened donor gut bacteria could influence Parkinson’s symptoms through the gut-brain connection.

And that last one deserves a giant WHO KNEW?! 😂

These are fascinating developments, but they aren't miracle cures. The wearable tail is an experimental concept, and fecal microbiota transplantation remains investigational for Parkinson’s.

You’ll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen reminds us that mood changes, fear of falling, digestive problems, and other invisible symptoms deserve attention and understanding.

Sometimes the best thing a care partner can do is simply ask:

“I've noticed something has changed. Do you want to talk about it?”

Because Parkinson’s research isn't just about tremors, medications, and movement anymore.

It's about the brain, the gut, mental health, balance, and finding better ways to live.

And sometimes the next promising idea comes from somewhere nobody expected.

  • 3 Surprising Parkinson’s Connections Hiding in Your Home & Medicine Cabinet | WHO KNEW?
    2026/10/14

What if something in your medicine cabinet, your daily medication routine, or even your living room could have a surprising connection to Parkinson’s?

A cough medicine ingredient. A common heartburn medication. And something you probably sit on every single day.

Welcome back to WHO KNEW?, where we explore surprising Parkinson’s research, separate scientific findings from speculation, and explain what it might mean for everyday life.

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, we explore three unexpected connections:

    • Ambroxol: An ingredient used in some cough medicines that researchers are studying for its potential effects on the brain's cellular cleanup processes.

    • Heartburn medications (PPIs): Research exploring possible associations with Parkinson’s risk, plus questions about digestion and levodopa response. I also share my experience taking pantoprazole and wondering whether it could be connected to my slower morning medication response.

    • Flame retardants in older furniture: Why chemicals called PBDEs, found in some older furniture foam, are being studied for neurological concerns and how they can accumulate in household dust.

And yes, that last one means we're talking about your couch.

Apparently, Parkinson’s research has officially made its way into the living room. 😂

Important distinction: These findings do not prove that heartburn medication or an old couch causes Parkinson’s. And ambroxol is not an established Parkinson’s treatment.

You’ll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen talks about the guilt and frustration that can come from learning about possible environmental exposures nobody warned us about.

    Her reminder is simple:

We can make better choices today without blaming ourselves for yesterday.

Because sometimes the biggest WHO KNEW? isn't discovering something frightening.

It's realizing there's something new we can ask, understand, or investigate.
