The Brother Who Taught Me the Power of Simply Doing

Some of the most influential people in our lives never realize the impact they've had on us.

In this episode of Living Beyond The Label™, Anthony P. Mitchell — The No Sweat Coach™ — turns the spotlight toward someone much closer to home: his younger brother, Marcus Mitchell.

This isn't a story about someone who intentionally set out to become a mentor or teacher. It's about the kind of influence that happens quietly, through consistency, commitment, family, faith, and simply showing up.

Anthony reflects on watching Marcus build a life centered around his family, his wife Patrina, his daughters Nia and Mia, his role as a brother and uncle, his church, and his community. Through those observations, Anthony came to understand an important truth:

Sometimes people teach us without ever realizing they're teaching us.

The episode explores the difference between influence through words and influence through example—and why the people closest to us may be learning the most from how we live every day.

Anthony also reflects on growing up with Marcus, the inevitable moments when brothers bump heads, and how maturity, faith, and time can change the way we see the people we've known our entire lives.

Most importantly, this episode is an expression of appreciation.

It's a reminder not to wait until someone is gone to tell them what they mean to you.

And it's a challenge for all of us:

Who are you influencing simply by the way you live?

Because sometimes you don't have to make a speech.

    Your life is the speech.

  • The Moment Someone Chose to Stand Up for Me
    2026/08/26

📋 Episode 125 — The Moment Someone Chose to Stand Up for Me

Sometimes the people who pour into our lives don't give us advice, teach us a lesson, or open a major door.

Sometimes, they simply stand up for us when it matters.

In Episode 125 of Living Beyond The Label, Anthony P. Mitchell, The No Sweat Coach, continues his special storytelling series honoring the people and moments that helped shape who he became.

Anthony takes us back to a childhood moment involving a neighborhood friend, Gerald Shields, and a confrontation that could have easily escalated. Instead of encouraging the conflict, Gerald stepped in, helped calm the situation, and made sure the situation was settled.

At the time, Anthony may not have fully understood the significance of that moment.

Years later, he realized that Gerald had demonstrated something powerful:

Sometimes leadership is simply choosing to bring people together instead of allowing conflict to divide them.

This episode is a tribute to Gerald Shields and a reminder that even seemingly small moments can leave a lasting impression on a person's life.

    🎯 NO SWEAT CHALLENGE™:

Think about someone who helped you, protected your peace, stopped a situation from becoming worse, or simply showed you what it meant to stand for something.

Did you ever tell them what that moment meant to you?

If they're still in your life, don't assume they already know.

    Tell them.

Because the moments we think are small can become memories someone carries for a lifetime.

This episode is part of Anthony's continuing storytelling series about the people who poured into him along the way—and why remembering those people matters.

  • The Opportunity That Someone Else Helped Me See

Episode 124 — The Opportunity That Someone Else Helped Me See

Sometimes someone pours into your life by teaching you.

    Sometimes they encourage you.

And sometimes, they simply give you an opportunity.

In this episode of Living Beyond The Label™, Anthony P. Mitchell — The No Sweat Coach™ — continues his storytelling series about the people who helped shape his life.

This time, Anthony shares the story of David Johnson, a well-respected high school football player who did something that may have seemed simple at the time—but meant much more to Anthony than David probably realized.

Growing up without sweat glands, summer could be challenging. But water was Anthony's place of peace and release. When he became old enough to work, one of his dreams was to become a lifeguard at the local pool.

When David's football team began its summer two-a-day practices, Anthony saw an opportunity to fill in for him as a lifeguard.

    There was just one problem.

Because of Anthony's inability to sweat, the pool manager was concerned that the heat could interfere with his ability to remain focused in the lifeguard chair.

The opportunity appeared to be gone.

    But then David stepped in.

    He talked with Anthony.

    He talked with the manager.

And ultimately helped convince him to allow Anthony to take his place.

That opportunity became about much more than a summer job.

It became a lesson in advocacy, confidence, responsibility, inclusion, and believing that someone deserves a chance.

Sometimes pouring into someone doesn't mean teaching them something.

    Sometimes it means simply saying:

    “Give them a chance.”

    🎯 NO SWEAT CHALLENGE™:

This episode comes with three challenges:

    1. REMEMBER: Think about someone who opened a door for you or gave you an opportunity.

    2. OPEN A DOOR: Identify one person you can help by creating or providing an opportunity.

    3. SAY IT OUT LOUD: If someone came to mind who made a difference in your life, tell them. Let them know that what they did mattered.

Because the opportunity someone gave you may have helped shape the person you became.

And now it's your turn to become a door opener for somebody else.

This episode also connects to Anthony's message of Leadership Under Pressure—because leadership isn't always about standing in front of people. Sometimes leadership is recognizing potential, advocating for someone, creating opportunities, and helping people succeed despite the circumstances they face.

Never underestimate the power of an opportunity.

    One opportunity can build confidence.

    One opportunity can create independence.

One opportunity can change how someone sees themselves.

    And sometimes...

One person is all it takes to help open the door.

    Your story isn't over.

  • The Man Who Taught Me That You Can Learn by Doing

Episode 123 — The Man Who Taught Me That You Can Learn by Doing

Sometimes someone teaches you a skill. Sometimes they teach you through their example. And sometimes, without realizing it, they teach you something that stays with you for the rest of your life.

In this episode of Living Beyond The Label™, Anthony P. Mitchell — The No Sweat Coach™ — begins a new storytelling series about the people who became part of his village and helped shape the person he would become.

This first story takes Anthony back to his childhood and introduces us to Mr. Johnny, a neighborhood carpenter who allowed a young Anthony to become his helper.

What Anthony initially saw as an opportunity to work and earn a little money became something much more meaningful. Through his time with Mr. Johnny, Anthony was exposed to carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, responsibility, work ethic, faith, and the importance of learning through experience.

    One lesson stayed with him:

    You Can Learn by Doing.

As a young boy, Anthony thought the lesson was about carpentry. As an adult, he recognizes that Mr. Johnny was teaching him something much bigger about life.

You don't have to know everything before you begin. Sometimes you have to start. You have to try, make mistakes, learn from someone who knows more than you, and keep going.

But there was another lesson hidden inside those experiences:

Sometimes the Greatest Thing You Can Do Is Take Somebody With You.

Teach them. Encourage them. Let them watch. Let them try. Give them an opportunity to learn.

Mr. Johnny may have simply been teaching a young boy how to work. But decades later, Anthony is still carrying those lessons—and now sharing them with others.

    🎯 NO SWEAT CHALLENGE™

    1. REMEMBER: Think about the person who poured into you. Who was your Mr. Johnny?

    2. REACH OUT: If that person is still here, contact them and tell them how much their influence meant to you.

    3. POUR FORWARD: Find someone you can teach, encourage, guide, or take with you. Share what you've learned and help someone else grow.

Because what someone poured into you wasn't meant to stop with you.

It's meant to be poured forward.

This episode also connects to Anthony's message of Leadership Under Pressure. Leadership isn't always about having a title or standing in front of a crowd. Sometimes leadership is recognizing potential, sharing what you know, setting an example, and helping someone become better because you were willing to take them along.

As Anthony begins this storytelling series, he invites listeners to think about the people who were part of their own village—the teacher, coach, neighbor, mentor, employer, friend, or someone who said something simple that stayed with you for decades.

Who poured into you—and who are you pouring into?
