  • Who Checks on the Strong Friend? Grief, Reciprocity & Real Connection
    2026/09/18

I’m still grieving the loss of my friend Danielle, and this week I came home from her wake and funeral with even more to process.

This episode is another real, off-the-cuff conversation about what grief has been bringing to the surface for me: anger, sadness, unanswered questions, changing beliefs, old friendships, family dynamics, authenticity, and something I think a lot of “strong” people eventually have to ask:

    Who is checking on me?

I talk about why anger actually helped me process some of my grief, what it felt like attending a Christian funeral while now identifying as agnostic, and how I’m learning to make room for people whose beliefs are different from mine without abandoning my own.

The funeral also brought me back into rooms with people I have known for years, and that made me think about how relationships change as we change.

Can people who knew an older version of you make room for who you are now?

How much should you hold back just to keep the peace?

When does being understanding turn into always being the person expected to adjust?

And when you are usually the person checking on everybody else, holding space, solving problems, or being “the strong one,” what happens when you need somebody too?

We talk about reciprocal relationships, checking the facts instead of assuming people don’t care, giving people the opportunity to show up differently, knowing when to stop chasing one-sided connections, and finding people who allow you to show up as your full self.

One thing grief keeps reminding me is that we were never meant to do all of this alone.

Find your people. Let them know you exist. Give people an opportunity to love the person you are becoming.

And give yourself permission to not just live—but to Live & Be Great.

  • When Grief Finds You: Loss, Regret & Reaching Out While You Can
    2026/09/04

Sometimes the episode you planned to record is not the episode life gives you.

In this deeply personal episode of Live & Be Great, I process grief in real time after learning that my college friend and former Savannah State University Amplifiers dance teammate, Danielle, passed away unexpectedly.

Her death brought up more than sadness. It made me confront the guilt that can come when adult friendships grow distant, what it means to be the person who has always tried to keep everybody connected, and the pressure we put on ourselves to become more successful, more accomplished, more healed, or more “together” before we allow ourselves to fully enjoy our lives.

I found myself asking questions I think many of us eventually have to face:

    Why didn’t I reach out?
    Has too much time passed?
Why am I waiting until I reach some imaginary finish line before I let myself live?
And whose standard am I using to decide whether I’ve done enough?

We talk about friendship, ADHD, being “the glue,” grief, mortality, perfectionism, changing definitions of success, the expectations many millennials grew up with, and why sometimes the simplest thing you can do is tell somebody, “I was thinking about you.”

This episode is also a reminder that you don’t need the perfect words, the perfect body, the perfect career, the perfect amount of money, or the perfect version of yourself before you reconnect with the people you love or allow yourself to experience joy.

If somebody keeps crossing your mind, reach out.

If there is something that gives you even a moment of genuine joy, make room for it.

And if grief has you questioning your life, your relationships, or what you want your next chapter to look like, you do not have to figure all of that out by yourself.

  • Common Sense Isn’t Common: Understanding the Programming Behind What We Believe
    2026/08/21

Do you ever wonder why something feels like “common sense” to you—but another person genuinely doesn’t see it the same way?

In this episode of Live & Be Great with Latonya McDonald, MS, I unpack the programming behind what we believe: the messages we absorb from family, culture, religion, race, gender, education, trauma, relationships, media, and the systems around us.

Not all programming is bad. Some of it protects us. Some of it helps us survive. But some beliefs eventually need to be questioned—especially when they begin affecting our relationships, our safety, or the way we treat other people.

We talk about the difference between understanding someone’s programming and excusing their behavior, why patterns still matter when evaluating safety, and why individual behavior must still give us evidence.

I also share some of my own experiences with deprogramming, including how I had to reconsider my beliefs around corporal punishment, take accountability for behavior I once participated in, apologize, and choose differently moving forward.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why “common sense” is not actually common to everyone
    • How family, culture, religion, trauma, and systems shape our beliefs
    • Why understanding someone’s programming does not eliminate accountability
    • How to recognize patterns without assuming every individual is identical
    • When curiosity helps—and when it becomes a way to avoid an answer you don’t like
    • Why shame can make people fight harder to protect an old belief system
    • How to tell the difference between someone’s potential for change and the evidence they are giving you right now
    • Why your past has witnesses—and how changed behavior becomes evidence of real growth
    • How to have difficult conversations without making the goal simply proving that you are right

I also walk you through the Live & Be Great Method:

    Be Seen.
    Name the Pattern.
    Understand the Why.
    Choose on Purpose.
    Live & Be Great.

Because understanding someone’s programming gives you context. What they do with new information gives you evidence. And what you do with that evidence is where your discernment, boundaries, accountability, and choices come in.
