Australia's under-16 social-media rule has changed who is expected to carry responsibility for children's online safety. This episode asks why the country acted, what the research really supports, where the evidence remains uncertain and how the Australian experiment should be judged.

Important distinction: accounts removed, continued use, harmful exposure and wellbeing are different outcomes. Early Australian findings should not yet be treated as proof of either success or failure.

Research suggests the relationship between social media and life satisfaction changes across adolescence—but the findings are more nuanced than a list of “danger ages.” We unpack the major UK study behind the headlines, explain the reported windows, the small and bidirectional effects, and what parents can do without panic or surveillance. Includes practical conversation starters and Australian support contacts.

Your son did not necessarily search for the messages filling his feed. New research suggests masculinity content about money, muscles, status, dating and toughness is reaching most adolescent boys—and recommendation systems are often doing the delivery.

This episode looks beyond the panic. We explore what a major survey of boys found about algorithms, body image, loneliness, emotional pressure, influencers and gaming, alongside Australian eSafety research and a 38-country study of adolescent loneliness.

Most importantly, we ask what parents can actually do: how to start a conversation without ridicule, how to widen a feed without pretending online friendships are fake, and why real-world belonging remains such a powerful protection.
