Brian Faughnan & Cort Winsett get together biweekly and start talking with each other (and with you the listener) about what they’ve been listening to lately. But they’ve got opinions on so. many. things. And not necessarily the opinions you’d always expect from two middle-aged white guys. Unasked for. Unnecessary. Unstoppable?Copyright 2023 All rights reserved. 社会科学

  • Episode 92: Wilco, Etc.
    2026/10/02

This week, Cort reports back on Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, an album Brian has been trying to force into his life for years and which has, according to Brian, been one of the most acclaimed records of the century for even longer. We get into Jeff Tweedy, the strange history of an album its own record label didn’t want, alternate mixes, violins (!!!), and Cort’s decision to conduct a highly scientific experiment by rearranging the songs on the album by play count.

From there, the “etc.” kicks in. We talk about Clue in both movie and stage form, talk Tim Curry, and Brian lauds Coyote vs. Acme, the movie that nearly disappeared into tax-write-off hell. We also find ourselves, somewhat unexpectedly, fully defending Supergirl.

In the rest of the non-listening portion of our listening podcast, The Traitors: New Blood proves that celebrities are not the only people capable of behaving irrationally, South Park finds another way to say, “Hey! No! Bad dog!”, and Oreo appears to be going through some kind of corporate identity crisis. There may also be a wardrobe malfunction.

Cort eventually gives Brian an assignment, and our random podcast generator suggests something involving Wolverine. Oh, happy day.

  • Episode 91: Arkansas Hozier. First Attempt.
    2026/09/18

This week, Brian reports back on Sawyer Hill’s new album Everybody’s Home, Nobody’s Happy, which gives us religion, Arkansas, a voice that appears to have been issued to a much larger human being, and the new musical concept: “Arkansas Hozier.” We try to decide exactly what kind of music Sawyer Hill is making. We may give it short shrift, but it’s enthusiastic short shrift, if that can be a thing.

Then Ben Folds Five gives us a rare chance to listen to a band’s historical evolution musically. Thirty years after their debut, Shelved First Attempt finally lets us compare the album they recorded and abandoned with the Ben Folds Five that actually came out. We get into alternate versions of “Philosophy,” “Julianne,” “Underground” and the rest. What exactly does good production mean? Knowing what not to clean up?

In the non-listening portion of our listening podcast, Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields gives us an excuse to talk about Chappell Roan, Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette and the continuing value of a proper music festival, which technically is listening related! Phoebe Bridgers finds the shortest possible route to Cort’s heart.

We also discover Hungry!, check back in on Seveneves, and spend some time remembering Dolly Parton and considering whether Sabrina Carpenter has a future assignment she doesn’t yet know about.

Finally, Brian decides that 25 years is long enough for Cort to keep dodging one of Brian’s favorite bands. Ever. Seriously.

As always, we close with the episode’s random podcast suggestion, where someone attempts to convince us that baseball produces joy.

  • Episode 90: The Meryl Streep Chum Challange
    2026/09/04

Episode 90: The Meryl Streep Chum Challenge

This week, Cort reports back on Cannonball, the debut album from Man/Woman/Chainsaw. We get into a band that seems determined not to sound like the same band from song to song, the proper deployment of a violin in indie rock, rotating lead singers, and an unexpectedly competitive field of things named “Cannonball,” including The Breeders and Damien Rice.

From there, a discussion of wild horses and the American food supply raises questions that nobody particularly wanted raised, and Mitch McConnell once again meanders into the conversation, because apparently we have accidentally given him recurring-character status.

In the non-listening portion of our listening podcast, we return to sharks. Specifically, Chum, a movie with a title that turns out to be extremely literal and dialogue so ambitious that we arrive at the question: could the world’s greatest living actress make this shit work? Netflix’s The Last House gets subjected to the kind of practical scrutiny its characters probably could have used, including questions involving a criminally underutilized skunk. We also check back in on Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, mourn Bonnaroo just as Brian figured out how to watch it from home, and make quick stops at new music from Weezer, Phoebe Bridgers and the Afghan Whigs.

We close it out and say G’Day to this week’s random podcast generator suggestion.
