Two phase 3 trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that Eli Lilly's investigational drug retatrutide, a once-weekly injection that acts on GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, reduced the severity of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea more than placebo over 80 weeks in adults with obesity or overweight. We go through the numbers from TRIUMPH-1-OSA (243 participants without type 2 diabetes) and TRIUMPH-2-OSA (448 participants with type 2 diabetes): changes in the apnea-hypopnea index and body weight compared with placebo, how many participants reached no or mild sleep apnea under the study's definition, and the side effects and treatment discontinuations reported for the two sleep apnea trials. Retatrutide is not approved and is legally available only to participants in Lilly's clinical trials, and the trials were funded by Lilly. Zepbound, by contrast, is FDA-approved for moderate-to-severe sleep apnea in adults with obesity (December 2024); the episode does not compare the two drugs.
