  • A Day Late and a Dollar Short—Understanding Overdrafts
    2026/09/29

Have you ever had a payment come out just before your paycheck arrived? You knew the money was coming—but the timing left you short.

In this episode of Life Happens, Money Matters, we’re talking about overdrafts: what they mean, how different services work, and what to do when your account goes below zero.

Using a simple example—$20 in your account and $30 in groceries—we’ll walk through what could happen next. We’ll also explore why a bank may approve a transaction one day and decline it another, how linked accounts and grace periods may help, and small steps you can take to avoid another shortage.

If this has happened to you, you’re not alone. Let’s make the terms easier to understand so you know what questions to ask and what choices are available.

  • The Check That Gave Me a College Education in Banking
    2026/09/09

You deposit a check into your bank account. You see the money. You make plans for it. But does that mean the check has actually cleared?

In this episode of Life Happens, Money Matters, I share the story of a government check I deposited during my first year in America—and the banking lesson that followed. What started with one check turned into a crash course in check holds, funds availability, returned checks, and the difference between money being available and a check actually being final.

We’ll follow what happens after you deposit a check, talk about why a bank may place a hold on your funds, what that hold notice is actually telling you, and why a check can sometimes still be returned even after funds appear available.

I’ll also share what I wish I had known then, some of the electronic options we have today, and one important connection that leads us directly into our next conversation: overdrafts.

  • From Piggy Bank to Paycheck: Understanding Checking & Savings
    2026/08/24

You may have had a bank account for years—but how well do you understand the account you have?

In this episode of Life Happens, Money Matters, we begin our Banking Basics in America series by going back to the foundation. We’ll talk about the simple difference between checking and savings, how your debit card fits in, and one cost that can easily go unnoticed: the monthly service fee.

I’ll also share one of my favorite memories from my years in banking—a six-year-old boy, a piggy bank full of change, and a grandmother who helped him build a savings habit that stayed with him as he grew up.

By the end of the episode, you’ll have one simple step to take: find out exactly what bank account you have, what it costs you, and what you need to do to avoid paying an unnecessary monthly fee.

Banking doesn’t have to feel complicated. Sometimes financial confidence begins with simply understanding what you already have.

Because when life happens, money matters.
