Hillary Frank, creator and longtime host of the award-winning parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, and author of the new Audiobook Wedlocked joins Ophira Eisenberg to talk about the gap between what motherhood is supposed to look like and what it actually feels like. After a difficult childbirth left Hillary with years of chronic pain, she struggled with feeling like a failure because her experience didn’t match the idealized version of birth she’d read about — and she eventually confronted midwife Ina May Gaskin about how those expectations had affected her. That experience helped shape Hillary’s new fictional audio thriller, Wedlocked, about a fitness influencer whose alarming health symptoms are repeatedly dismissed, exploring the pressure on women to smile through pain and the consequences of being medically gaslit. Hillary also explains how loneliness and postpartum depression inspired her to start The Longest Shortest Time, why she faced judgment for choosing to have one child, and how she learned to stop treating every teenage slammed door as a personal emergency. Along the way, she shares the story of the doctor who sent “shame letters” to six colleagues who had misdiagnosed her, while Ophira reflects on generational stoicism, inherited emotional habits, and the challenge of giving a ten-year-old more independence in the chaotic streets of Brooklyn. Their conversation makes room for anger, repair, and the possibility that parenting gets better with age — especially when you finally learn to let the teenager teenager.
