Do you want to know how our legal system works? You’ve come to the right place. LegalEagle is all about giving you an insider’s view to the legal system. Have some fun and learn to think like a lawyer. I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer.

But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous. So I created this channel to answer your burning questions about the law and the legal profession. While all legal movies and shows take dramatic license to make things more interesting (nobody wants to see hundreds of hours of brief writing), many of them have a grain of truth. Learn everything you always wanted to know about being an attorney!

  • Can You Be Charged for Wiping Your Own Phone at the Border?
    2026/10/17
At an airport border stop, officers asked for a phone passcode. What the traveler allegedly typed in did not unlock the phone. It erased it. Now it is a federal case.
In this episode, we explain the legal fight in plain English:
    - What happened at the airport, according to court filings and news reports
    - What a "duress" password is, and why prosecutors say this case is the first of its kind
    - What the defense argues about the search, the lack of a warrant, and the right to a lawyer
    - Why the law on border searches and phone passcodes is unsettled, and why it differs from state to state
    - What "obstruction of justice" means, and why courts could treat the case differently from a normal phone search
    - What the court is expected to decide next
Important: this is an ongoing case. The defendant has not been convicted, and everything described is an allegation or a legal argument. We stick to documented facts and present both sides.
This episode explains the law. It is not legal advice, and it is not a guide to handling a search by officers. If you face a search or an investigation, talk to a licensed attorney.

  • The Cartoon Animal Trademark War: Can a Company Own a Beaver?
    2026/10/16
What happens when a late-night host dares a famous brand to take him to court?
In this episode, we break down the legal fight behind the headlines, in plain English:
    - What the "Buc-Off" parody challenge was, and how the company responded
    - Why trademark owners must defend their marks, and why critics say some go too far
    - Where parody ends and trademark infringement begins
    - How courts have treated defamation lawsuits against Last Week Tonight, including a federal judge's dismissal in June 2026
    - What an anti-SLAPP law is, and why these laws matter for comedians, reporters and small businesses
We present both sides: the company's right to protect its brand, and the argument that aggressive lawsuits can pressure small businesses into giving up.
Which side do you think has the stronger argument? Tell us in the comments.

  • Can a State Execute You Twice? The Tennessee Case With No Clear Answer
    2026/10/15
Tennessee tried to carry out an execution, and it did not go as planned. Now a question that courts have rarely faced is on the table: can a state try again?
In this episode, we walk through what the public record and credible reporting say, without graphic detail:
    - What happened on the day of the scheduled execution, and what officials have said since
    - The governor's response, the independent review, and the halt on other executions this year
    - What the Eighth Amendment's ban on "cruel and unusual punishment" says, and how courts have treated failed executions in the past
    - The Alabama cases from 2022 and what they suggest about a second attempt
    - Why experts say there is no clear law on this, and what could happen next
We also remember that this case began with a 1995 killing, and with a family that waited decades for a final answer. Supporters and opponents of the death penalty see this case very differently, and we present both views.
What do you think the law should say when an execution fails? Tell us in the comments.
