Growing up in rural Virginia, Mary remembers a home full of music, neighborhood children, laughter, incredible cooking, and a mother who always believed in her.

Joan wasn’t a professional musician, but she understood something deeper about music: it should be felt.

And one piece of advice she gave Mary would go on to shape her entire musical life:

“Sing so everyone can understand every word you’re saying.”
