Cold, isolated, and making decisions like a human calculator: a carbon-fiber trekking pole snapped and wrapped in blood was found on top of snow after a blizzard, placed there by someone who had walked out of the mountain alive - so where did he go, and how did he convert dwindling resources into the exact moves that kept him alive? This episode zeroes in on one man's step-by-step survival arithmetic and a single broken knee that turned a planned 102-mile route into a race against thermodynamics and time.
In this episode, we follow the timeline from the planned start at Millhaven Pass through the Calloway Hundred and into the moment everything changed, describing the choices, terrain, and gear that mattered and asking whether the final decisions were the result of training, calculation, or sheer will.
Person: Eric Graham
Date: December 18-19, 2023
Event: Calloway Hundred self-supported route
Location: Ridgetop Bench and Fenwick Branch crossing on Calloway Hundred Road
Status: Found in hospital; pole discovered by snowplow operator Thomas Hicks
- At 6:14 AM on December 19, 2023, Thomas Hicks struck a snapped carbon-fiber trekking pole in a roadside ditch while plowing Calloway Hundred Road.
- Eric Graham began the Calloway Hundred at 6:00 AM on December 18, 2023, from Millhaven Pass with a plan and two days of winter kit.
- He hit Ridgetop Bench at 7:18 PM on December 18 with temperature around 9°F and snow at about one inch per hour when his right knee popped and structurally failed.
- Fenwick Branch crossing is near mile 71 and is a single 12-inch diameter pine log spiked with steel nails; the eastern bank bolt had been loosening since October per maintenance records.
- Eric completed a 100-mile ultramarathon the previous August in just over 28 hours, demonstrating experience in pacing, solitude, and calculated endurance.
