In this episode of Realms of Leadership, I explain why team leaders build systems while peer leaders build ecosystems—networks held together by influence, trust, and shared purpose rather than titles or compliance. I break down how peer leadership enables scaling through collaboration, partnerships, and cross-referrals, and why leadership in real peer groups rotates based on the situation. Using examples like my Sunday cycling group, Fight Club, Rotary, Alcoholics Anonymous, and churches, I show how healthy ecosystems grow because every member takes responsibility for making the group better and bigger. I also address imposter syndrome in new peer groups and argue the fastest path to belonging is shifting from “Will I be accepted?” to “How can I help?” Finally, I warn that scarcity and territorial thinking shrink ecosystems, and I invite you to contribute actively starting day one.
