Chief Stoney Mathis is a respected law enforcement leader with over 34 years of experience across Georgia police departments. Known as a turnaround expert, he has successfully led agencies through significant challenges, restoring trust, improving morale, reducing crime, and developing future leaders. Chief Mathis began his career as a patrol officer with the Monroe Police Department before rising through the ranks at Henry County Police Department. He later served as Chief of Police in Chattahoochee Hills, where he emphasized listening and relationship-building, and in Fairburn, where he achieved a remarkable 52% reduction in crime, helping transform the city into one of Georgia’s safest. Most recently, as Chief in Columbus, Georgia, he stabilized a struggling department facing severe staffing shortages and rising crime, morale, and community partnerships. The Columbus Police Department has seen a 37% reduction in overall crime rate and was selected for the 2025 Agency of the Year Award by the Georgia Chapter of the FBI National Academy.
