Indigenous children from the Ecuadorian Amazon weave their magical world into an audio play for city dwellers—a fascinating testimony to a different worldview. The symphony of jungle sounds—frogs, crickets, birds, and rain—blends with the songs of the children and the shamans. The adventure of overcoming the tiger, who seeks to devour the world of creation, the mountains, and the rainbow, comes vividly to life through sound.
The parents, the children, and the village father tell stories about hunting and the spirits. A deceased grandmother returns as a stag with magnificent antlers, and the children share advice on how to protect oneself from bad dreams.
The German and English audio translations were created by enthusiastic bilingual children living in Ecuador.
We recorded “Children of the Jungle” in El Edén, a Kichwa community on the banks of the Napo River between Coca and Rocafuerte in Ecuador. The village is remote and lies within one of the few remaining areas of primary Amazon rainforest.
The Kichwa people live by fishing, hunting, and gathering, while also cultivating small plots of cassava, rice, and fruit.
The world of the last rainforest peoples is under threat from logging as well as oil exploration and extraction.
A radio la luna 99.3 production.
