As we reach the final episode of our 120 Podcast Kenya series, we bring back four voices from different stages of Kenya’s developing paramedic profession to look beyond where we are today and ask: What could the future of EMS and paramedicine in Kenya look like?
In this important conversation, we explore the infrastructure challenges affecting emergency response, workforce development and retention, the paramedic role including professional recognition, policy and regulatory barriers, education and clinical exposure, and the opportunities available to young professionals entering the field.
We also discuss the importance of research in developing an evidence base for Kenyan prehospital care, and how universities, hospitals, government and non-governmental organisations can work together to strengthen emergency care.
Looking further ahead, our guests share their vision for Kenya’s EMS system and the paramedic profession over the next 5–10 years, before offering advice to current paramedic students and recent graduates who will play an important role in shaping the profession.
Joining us for the final part of this conversation with our four recurring guests:
🇰🇪 George Amolo
Co-founder & Acting President of the Paramedic Association of Kenya (TPAK), bringing a leadership and professional perspective on the development of paramedicine and EMS in Kenya.
🇰🇪 Jeffrey Tindi
Sharing his perspective on paramedicine, emergency care and the continued development and recognition of the profession in Kenya.
🇰🇪 Wangechi King
A final-year paramedic student, bringing the perspective of the emerging workforce and her experiences of the evolving role of paramedics and the future of emergency care.
🇰🇪 Blessing Atetwe Kwamboka
A recent BSc Paramedic graduate, representing the next generation of Kenyan paramedics and sharing her perspective on entering a developing profession.
From infrastructure and regulation, to education, research, collaboration and professional identity, this episode looks at what needs to happen next — and, importantly, how the people working and studying within the profession can help shape that future.
The future of Kenyan paramedicine will be built by the people willing to develop it, research it, advocate for it and ultimately deliver it.
