Karen grew up poor in the Nevada desert, ran away at fourteen, and taught herself wine over the cheapest bottles in the shop. She landed in 1970s New York with six dollars, collected 325rejection slips before her first sale, and — to earn a seat tasting with the men who ran wine then — agreed not to speak for six years.
