From the near future, Kid talks with Izzy on 2021 Instagram, describing a world devastated by floods and pollution. He’s escaped by the skin of his teeth from a terrifying encounter, mind to mind, with someone insanely famous and powerful. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Back at the beginning of Kid’s story, we meet him and his friends Eliza and Pas, whooping it up in the ruins of London as they go on ‘Scav Squad’ duties in search of supplies for their people. The Offliners, the underground tribe, the outsiders rebelling against a totally digital future.

Kid and his Offliner mates Eliza and Pas run into the digital apparition of the most famous girl in the world. She promises a future of perfect happiness in Perspecta 3, the ultimate life app. What’s not to like? Why is Kid so conflicted? From Lucien’s, the black market store where everything has its price, it’s up to the roof where the future can be seen all around, gleaming anonymously on the outskirts of dead London. No wonder the songs of the Golden Dusk feel like a lifeline to a vanished past.
