  • Episode 6: Nakano Takeko: The Last Samurai Woman
    2026/02/02

In this episode, we tell the story of Nakano Takeko, a samurai woman who lived in mid-19th-century Japan, a time of great social upheaval. The episode describes how the arrival of the American fleet led by Commodore Perry forced Japan to open up to international trade, destabilizing the shogun's power and triggering a civil war between the shogun's supporters and clans loyal to the emperor. Takeko, a member of the Aizu samurai clan loyal to the shogun, was trained in martial arts from childhood, particularly in the use of the naginata, a weapon traditionally associated with female warriors. The crucial and often unrecognized role of female samurai in battle is highlighted, citing archaeological finds that support their participation, and culminates with a description of the final battle in which Takeko and other women fought and died honorably against the imperial forces.

  • Episode 5: Criteria and Objectives for Iaido Exams
    2026/01/25

This episode provides a comprehensive guide for Iaido practitioners preparing for the ranking examinations, outlining the specific criteria and objectives required for progression. The sections are organized by rank, starting with Ikkyu (1st kyu) and progressing to Rokudan (6th dan). For entry-level ranks, such as Ikkyu, the emphasis is on fundamentals such as proper dress, posture, and reiho (etiquette), as well as knowledge of the twelve kata of seitei. As one advances in rank, the requirements evolve to include greater confidence and familiarity with techniques, such as proper nukitsuke (drawing for cutting) and noto (sheathing), and the need to demonstrate calmness, metsuke (gaze), and kihaku (fighting spirit). Higher ranks, particularly from Sandan onward, also require the performance of koryu (ancient schools) kata and the expression of riai (principles) and elegance in practice.
