  • Why Is My Computer So Slow? (Simple Fixes That Actually Work)
    2026/04/29

    We’ve all been there…

You turn on your computer, click on a program… and then you wait. And wait. And wait.

Suddenly, something that used to take seconds now feels like it takes forever. And the first thought most people have?

    👉 “That’s it… I need a new computer.”

But what if that’s not actually true?

This week on KE-NNECT – Making Technology Simple, host Ron Fiedler is joined by resident technology expert Kirt Hignett to break down one of the most common frustrations people face — a slow computer — and explain what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Right from the start, Ron highlights something we often forget — computers are just like cars. If you don’t maintain them, they won’t perform at their best.

And as Kirt explains, most slow computers aren’t broken… they’re simply overloaded.

Over time, devices build up temporary files, outdated software, unused programs, and background apps that quietly eat away at performance.

    The good news?

Many of the fixes are surprisingly simple.

One of the biggest takeaways from the episode is something we’ve all heard before — but often ignore:

👉 Turn it off… and turn it back on again.

It might sound basic, but restarting your computer regularly clears background processes, allows updates to install properly, and can solve a huge number of issues almost instantly.

From there, Kirt walks listeners through simple, practical steps to improve performance, including:

    • Clearing cache and temporary files
    • Removing programs and apps you no longer use
    • Managing startup programs
    • Keeping your system updated
    • Even physically cleaning dust from your machine to prevent overheating

The conversation then takes a deeper dive into what’s actually inside your computer — breaking down terms like CPU (the brain), RAM (working memory), and storage (where everything lives) in a way that’s easy for anyone to understand.

    One key insight?

👉 Upgrading small components — like switching to a solid-state drive (SSD) — can dramatically improve performance without replacing the entire computer.

Ron and Kirt also discuss when it is time to upgrade, with a simple rule of thumb:

✔ Around 5 years old, it may be time to consider a replacement

✔ Under that, a tune-up or upgrade is often all you need

They also touch on avoiding the common trap of overspending on unnecessary upgrades, with Kirt reminding listeners:

👉 “There’s no point buying a Ferrari if you’re just going down the street for milk.”

By the end of the episode, one message is clear:

Technology doesn’t have to be overwhelming — and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

With a little understanding, regular maintenance, and the right advice, you can keep your computer running smoothly for years.

  • Your Online Presence Explained: What Every Business Needs to Get Right
    2026/04/15

If people can’t find your business online… you’re missing opportunities every single day.

This week on KE-NNECT – Making Technology Simple, host Ron Fiedler sits down with technology expert Kirt Hignett to talk about something every business owner needs to get right:

    👉 Your online presence

Whether you’re a small local business, working from home, or growing your brand — being visible online is no longer optional… It’s essential.

In this episode, we break it down in simple terms 👇

✅ What “online presence” actually means for your business

✅ Why your website is your digital home base

✅ How social media acts as your modern-day advertising

✅ Choosing the right platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok & more)

✅ How Google and reviews can make or break your visibility

✅ The power of local Facebook groups (and how they can bring in real customers)

✅ Free vs paid advertising — where to start without wasting money

    One of the biggest takeaways?

👉 Your online presence doesn’t need to be complicated — but it does need to be consistent.

If you’re relying purely on word of mouth, you could be missing out on new customers who are already searching for your services online right now.

  • 1: Your Website Is Your Storefront: Hosting, Security & Email Explained
    2026/01/23

In today’s digital world, your website is often the first — and sometimes only — interaction people have with your business. In this episode of KE-NNECT, Ron Fiedler sits down with resident technology expert Kirt Hignett to unpack what really goes into a professional, secure, and reliable online presence.

Together, they explore why a website is far more than something you “set and forget.” Hosting quality, local support, ongoing maintenance, security updates, and professional email systems all play a major role in how your business is perceived and how well it performs online.

This episode is designed for business owners, professionals, and individuals who either already have a website or know they should — but may not realise what’s happening behind the scenes.

From outdated plugins and weak passwords to free email accounts and missing backups, small oversights can quickly turn into serious problems.

Listeners will walk away with a clear understanding of what needs to be in place, what to avoid, and how to ensure their technology supports their business rather than holding it back.

If your website hasn’t been reviewed or updated in the last two to three years, now is the time to act.

KE-NNect is currently offering ongoing website maintenance for $44 per month (normally $66) for the first 12 months when you sign up before the end of February.

  • 2: Don’t Click That! – Antivirus, VPNs & Online Scams
    2026/02/18

    KE_NNECT – Making Technology Simple

Podcast City Business & Lifestyle Network

Technology is supposed to make life easier — but sometimes it can feel confusing, expensive, and even a little frightening.

From antivirus subscriptions and pop-up security alerts to driver updates and VPN advertising, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by what your computer is telling you.

That’s exactly what host Ron Fiedler and resident technology expert Kirt Hignett tackled in this episode of KE_NNECT – Making Technology Simple.

Right from the start, they discussed something many people experience when buying a new computer — the free antivirus trials that suddenly ask for credit card details after 30 days.

As Kirt explained, many of these programs are designed to upsell extra features that most everyday users simply don’t need.

Instead of paying hundreds of dollars every year for security packages filled with extras, Kirt shared that for many home users the built-in protection already included with Windows — Windows Defender — is often more than capable of doing the job.

Ron and Kirt also discussed one of the fastest-growing online threats today — fake virus alerts and scam warnings.

Many people have seen them: a flashing message appears on your screen telling you to call a number because your computer has been hacked.

In reality, these warnings are scams designed to frighten people into giving criminals remote access to their computer.

Kirt’s advice was simple — never click the warning and never call the number. Restarting the computer will usually clear the message.

One of the most memorable moments of the episode came when Kirt shared a rule he often tells his clients:

“Treat your computer like your underwear — you don’t share it with strangers.”

This is especially important when someone offers to remotely “fix” your computer. If you don’t know the person, never allow them access.

The conversation also explored VPNs. While VPNs can be useful in some situations, such as travelling overseas, Kirt explained that most everyday home users simply don’t need one.

Ron and Kirt also touched on mobile phone security. Modern smartphones already have strong built-in protection, and the biggest risk usually comes from clicking suspicious links or adverts.

By the end of the episode, one message was clear — technology security doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Often the best protection is knowledge, common sense, and good advice from someone you trust.
