  • Prevent Spiritual Drift
    2026/10/18
How do you know when you’ve begun drifting—and would you even notice? Most people don’t abandon their faith overnight; they slowly lose sight of what matters most. In one of the shortest books of the Bible, Jude offers surprising wisdom for recognizing the subtle currents that can pull us away from Jesus while pointing us back toward authentic spiritual health. This week, we’ll discover why discernment is more important than ever in a world full of persuasive voices.  Watch Full Service Discussion Guide To view .docx version of this guide, click here. Before we begin, let’s take a quiet moment and pray for God’s direction for our time together. Then we’ll take a couple of minutes to go around and share where we’ve seen God at work in our lives this week. Specifically, how were you able to apply the action steps from our last time together? To remind you, they were: 1. Let go of something you’ve treated as essential that isn’t. 2. Practice a shared faith marked by mercy, peace, and love. Introduction Last week, we began our series Horizon, exploring the New Testament letter of Jude and how we can stay focused on Jesus when life pulls us in different directions. How has that been going? This week, we continue exploring Jude’s warnings about teachings and influences that can gradually pull us away from Jesus. Jude was writing to Christians who were encountering confusing messages about what to believe and how to life. His letter reminds us that not everything that sounds spiritual necessarily reflects the teachings of Jesus. Connect Have you ever been convinced something was true, only to discover later that you were mistaken? Where do people today get most of their ideas about God and spirituality? What are some ways people can gradually drift away from their values or convictions without realizing it? Opening Spiritual drift rarely happens all at once. Sometimes it begins with small compromises, misplaced priorities, or ideas that sound good but slowly move us away from Jesus. Jude warns his readers about counterfeit spirituality-—beliefs and practices that may sound spiritual but don’t reflect the life and teachings of Jesus. He also reminds them of God’s marvelous grace, which offers both forgiveness and the power to live differently. Rather than simply looking for what is wrong with other people, Jude’s warnings invite us to examine our own lives and consider how we can stay spiritually grounded. This leads us to our main idea for the week. We can protect ourselves from spiritual drift. Unpack Read each set of verses out loud as a group, making observations as you go. Afterward, discuss each of the connected questions before moving to the next set of verses. The first two passages are stories that Jude is reminding his readers about. Read Numbers 14:1–11 Jude reminds his readers about the Israelites who were rescued from Egypt but later refused to trust God (see Jude 5). In this passage, the people become fearful and consider returning to Egypt rather than following God’s direction. What caused the Israelites to lose confidence in God’s promises? How did their fears influence their decisions and actions? What are some ways fear, comfort, or personal preferences can cause us to drift away from God’s direction in your life? Read Numbers 16:1–11 Jude also reminds his readers of the ancient story of Korah and his followers rebelling against Moses and Aaron (see Jude 11). In this passage, they are claiming spiritual authority and leadership for themselves. What reasons does Korah give for challenging Moses and Aaron? What is the difference between healthy questioning of authority and resisting accountability? Why might pride make it difficult for us to recognize when we need correction? Read Jude 17–21 After warning about the dangers of false teaching and outright spiritual rebellion, Jude turns to how followers of Jesus can remain grounded in their faith and God’s love. What specific instructions does Jude give his readers in these verses? How do these instructions offer a different way of living from the examples we’ve just read? What might it look like to put one of Jude’s instructions into practice this week? Action Steps This is where we take what we’ve discussed and put it into practice!  Read the action steps below and discuss how you can live them out this week in practical ways. Eagerly correct  one area of counterfeit spirituality in your life. Jude warns about spiritual attitudes that can lead us away from Jesus. These might include placing personal experiences above scripture, using God’s forgiveness as an excuse for wrongdoing, resisting accountability, or trying to make Jesus support our personal opinions and agendas. Which of these tendencies do ...

  • Jesus is Our Horizon
    2026/10/12
What keeps you grounded when everything around you feels uncertain? Nearly 2,000 years ago, Jude—one of Jesus’ own brothers and an early Christian leader—wrote a short but powerful letter to people navigating confusion, competing voices, and pressure to compromise what they believed. His message is surprisingly relevant today. Join us as we begin  Horizon, a three-week series of messages exploring how to develop a faith that stays anchored when life feels unpredictable. Watch Full Service Discussion Guide To view the .docx version of this guide, click here. Before we begin, let’s take a quiet moment and pray for God’s direction of our time together. Then we’ll take a couple of minutes to go around and share where we’ve seen God at work in our lives this week. Specifically, how have we applied the Action Steps from last week? As a reminder, they were: 1. Commit to be a brave part of the mission with Journey this year and 2. Make an audacious goal of inviting five people to our Christmas services.  Introduction Today, we begin a new three-week series called Horizon. When you’re on a journey at sea, the horizon helps you stay oriented and keep your course. The same can be true in our spiritual lives. We’re surrounded by different voices telling us what to believe, what matters, and how we should live. Without realizing it, we can begin to drift. For the next three weeks, we’ll explore the short New Testament letter of Jude. Jude writes to Christians who were hearing confusing messages about what to believe and how to live. His words can help us stay spiritually oriented, grounded in Jesus, and moving forward in faith. Connect Let’s start our discussion time with some “get-to-know-you” questions. Are you usually good with directions, or do you depend on GPS? When you have a question about something, where do you usually go first for information? Do you enjoy hearing lots of different opinions, or do too many opinions make you feel overwhelmed? Opening Faith can sometimes feel confusing. Different churches, Christians, podcasts, books, social media voices, and even people we respect may tell us different things about what Christians should believe or how they should live. Jude reminds us that not every question carries the same weight. There are essential truths about Jesus and the Christian faith that have been handed down through generations. There are also many issues about which faithful Christians can disagree. Rather than allowing every disagreement or question to throw us off course, we can learn to keep Jesus and the essentials of our faith at the center while walking alongside other people who can help us grow. This leads us to our Main Idea for the week: We can find spiritual direction in a confusing world. Unpack Read each set of verses out loud as a group, making observations as you go. Afterward, discuss each of the connect questions before moving to the next set of verses. Read: Jude 1–3 (Jude has one chapter; read verses 1–3.) In this passage, Jude reminds his readers that they are loved and cared for by God before urging them to hold firmly to the Christian Faith. What does Jude remind his readers about their relationship with God before giving them any instructions? What do you think Jude means by “the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people”? Why might knowing what is essential to our faith help us when we encounter confusing or competing ideas? Read: Matthew 7:24–27 In this passage, Jesus compares people who hear and follow his teaching to someone who builds a house on a solid foundation. What do the two builders have in common, and what is different about them? What eventually reveals the strength of each foundation? What does Jesus say makes someone’s spiritual foundation strong? Why is it sometimes easier to listen to Jesus’ teaching than to put it into practice? Read: Ephesians 4:11–16 In this passage, Paul describes Christian maturity as becoming increasingly grounded in Jesus and growing together with other believers. What picture does Paul use in verse 14 to describe someone who is spiritually unsettled? According to these verses, what helps people grow toward spiritual maturity? What role do other Christians play in helping us become more focused and moving in the right direction? How does Paul describe the role each person plays in helping the whole body grow? Why might we sometimes think of spiritual growth as something we do on our own? Action Step This is where we take what we’ve discussed and put it into practice. Read the Action Steps below and discuss how you can live them out this week in practical ways. 1. Let go of something you’ve treated as essential that isn’t. Think about your own understanding of Christianity. Is there a rule, expectation, or ...

  • Willing to Go
    2026/10/05
Being part of a church can sometimes mean attending services and enjoying events and programs. But Jesus has a completely different definition: he sees being part of God’s family as being part of God’s MISSION. And so, at the end of his earthly time with his disciples, he sends them out with a Great Commission to GO into the whole world with his message of forgiveness. In this week’s message, we’ll allow Jesus to give us that same challenge: we’ll hear him call us to grow in our boldness and bravery so that we can reach more people together. Address the doubt or fear that stands in your way of trusting God and 2. Take a bold step in the direction Jesus is leading you. Introduction  Throughout this series, we’ve been looking at ordinary people who trusted God enough to take courageous steps of faith. Sometimes what keeps us from taking those steps isn’t that we don’t want to follow Jesus. We simply don’t feel ready. We focus on our limitations, fears, or lack of confidence and wonder whether we have what it takes. But following Jesus doesn’t depend on our own strength or confidence. We can trust him to be with us, even when what he asks feels beyond our abilities. This week, as we finish our Overcome series, we’ll explore the mission Jesus gives his followers and what it means for each of us and for Journey of Faith. Connect  Let’s start our discussion time with some “get-to-know-you” questions.  Are you usually someone who likes trying new things or prefers what’s familiar? What’s something you’ve tried that took you outside your comfort zone? What helps you feel more comfortable trying something new? Opening  When Jesus gave his followers the Great Commission, he asked them to do something much bigger than themselves: go and make disciples of all nations. But Jesus surrounded that command with two important promises. He has all authority, and he will always be with them. That changes the way we think about courage. Boldness isn’t believing we’re more capable than we thought. It’s trusting that Jesus is with us as we obey him. This leads us to our main idea for the week: With Jesus’ presence, we can boldly obey him and GO. Unpack  Read each set of verses out loud as a group, making observations as you go. Afterward, discuss each of the connected questions before moving to the next set of verses.  Read: Matthew 28:18–20 In this passage, Jesus gives his followers a mission to make disciples and promises that they will never carry out that mission alone. What words or phrases stand out to you in Jesus’ instructions? What does Jesus actually tell his followers to do? How might have Jesus’ promise to be with them changed how the disciples viewed his mission for them. Where might Jesus be asking you to “go” in the ordinary places and relationships of your life? Read: Acts 1:8 In this passage, just before returning to heaven, Jesus tells his followers that the Holy Spirit will give them power to be his witnesses, beginning where they are and expanding outward to increasingly distant places. According to Jesus, where does the power to carry out his mission come from? What does Jesus say his followers will receive power to do? Jesus talks about reaching others. If our church was our “Jerusalem, what might it look like for us to move into new areas of the South Bay with the Good news of Jesus. What might this expanding picture of mission look like for us—personally and together as Journey of Faith? Reflect: The Future of Journey of Faith In the message on Sunday, Pastor Jason talked about starting a third campus and making improvements at our Manhattan Beach campus. We believe that God is doing great things in the South Bay, and we’re excited about how these plans will help us be part of what he’s doing. Take some time to reflect and discuss: How does creating a third campus relate to the Bible passages we just looked at? What opportunities could a third campus create for the people who already live, work, attend school, and have relationships in that part of the South Bay? What excites you about Journey of Faith and where God is leading us? Action Step This is where we take what we’ve discussed and put it into practice. Read the Action Steps below and discuss how you can live them out this week in practical ways. 1. Commit to be a brave part of the mission with Journey ...
