• The Day I Wish I Could Do Over: When Fear Takes Over
    2026/09/01

Have you ever had a moment with your child that you wish you could go back and do differently?

    I have.

In this episode, I share a story from a moment in my kitchen that was incredibly traumatic for me.

I was exhausted, overwhelmed and frightened. I thought I knew what was happening, and I believed I needed to stop it.

Years later, I can look back at that moment with a very different understanding.

I also share a story about a mum I was working with. Her son told her he was struggling, and for the first time, she found herself having to put into practice what she'd been learning.

Her experience brought me right back to my own kitchen and made me think about what I wish I'd understood then.

This isn't about finding the perfect response, or believing we can control what our child does.

It's about what we might see when we can create a little space between what happens and how we respond.

If you've ever replayed a moment and thought, “I wish I'd done that differently,” this episode is for you.

And if you listen and it brings something up for you, a memory, a question, something you're struggling with right now, send me an email sandra@withsandra.co.nz and let me know.

You don't need to have the right words. Just tell me what's on your mind.

    I read every message.

  • I’m Their Mum: Loving a child with addiction or mental health struggles
    2026/08/25

When your adult child is struggling with addiction or mental health, people may tell you to walk away. But what if you can't — and don't actually want to?

    Because this is your child.

You remember who they were before all of this. The clever little boy or girl you were so proud of. The child who climbed into your bed in the middle of the night. The child who once thought you were their hero.

And even though they are grown now, that instinct to move towards your child when they are hurting is still there.

So what happens when your instinct is to fix, protect and make things better — but this is something you cannot fix for them?

In this episode, Sandra explores the very real tension between being a mum and recognising that your adult child has a life, choices and a journey that you cannot live for them.

We talk about why the urge to step in can feel so hardwired, what happens when your child isn't ready to do the hard thing, and why wanting life to be different and knowing how to make it different aren't always the same thing.

And perhaps most importantly, we look at what it might mean to stop choosing between carrying everything and walking away.

If you've ever thought, "I'm their mum. Who else is going to be there for them?", this episode is for you.

    There is another way.

  • When You Feel Like You Have No Choice
    2026/08/18

You said you wouldn't answer the phone this time. You wouldn't transfer the money, wouldn't make the call, wouldn't step in again. And then you did — and afterwards, all you could think was: but what choice did I have? This episode isn't about whether you should step in or step back. It's about something underneath that question: the difference between "I have to do this" and "I'm choosing to do this" — and why that distinction changes everything.

    In This Episode

This episode isn't about whether you should step in or step back — it's about something underneath that question. Sandra explores why "just stop rescuing" so rarely works, even when you know it's true, and explores the difference between feeling trapped by a choice and recognising that you're making one — even when it's difficult. She talks about a different kind of resilience — not strength, not walking away, but the quiet work of sitting in discomfort without rushing to fix it — and why "I can't do this" might sometimes mean you haven't yet built the capacity to tolerate what comes after the change. Along the way, she offers a few questions worth asking yourself next time you feel pulled to step in: What am I doing? Why am I doing it? What am I afraid will happen if I don't? Because the goal was never to do more, or to do less. It's to have more choice.

  • What is Wrong With Me?
    2026/08/03

There's a particular kind of shame that shows up after you've reacted badly — the loud voice, the pushing, the moment you didn't recognise yourself. And underneath it, a question that's easy to ask and hard to answer: what is wrong with me?

This week, Sandra looks at that question differently — at fight, freeze, flight and fawn, and why the response you're most ashamed of might be the one you understand the least.

    In this episode:

    • Why fight is the response we talk about the least — and the shame that comes from looking like the problem instead of someone who is scared
    • What's happening underneath the reaction, long before you've had a chance to think
    • The difference between understanding a response and excusing it
    • A question that might sit better than "what's wrong with me"

  • The Power of Connection
    2026/07/27

What if the answer isn't to control your child's recovery — and it isn't to walk away either?

For a long time, Sandra believed she only had two options: keep trying to fix her son, or step back completely and let him hit rock bottom. In this episode, she shares the moment her son put his hands over his ears mid-conversation — and the question that came after it and changed everything.

    In this episode you'll hear:

    • The moment Sandra realised her son had stopped listening — and what she'd been doing instead of connecting
    • Why "how do I want to show up?" became the question that changed things
    • What she found when she started questioning the idea that stepping back was the only way to help
    • The difference between an environment with no consequences and one where connection is still possible
    • Why staying connected doesn't mean losing yourself, and control was never the only alternative to walking away

  • They Don't Have to Hit Rock Bottom
    2026/07/20

They just have to hit rock bottom.

    Stand back.

Wait for it to get bad enough.

But what if that's not what actually changes people?

In this episode, Sandra challenges one of the most deeply held beliefs about addiction—and explains why she's no longer willing to accept the idea that hope begins with more suffering.

If you've ever felt torn between the advice you've been given and everything your instincts tell you as a mum… if you've wondered whether standing back and waiting for the worst is really the only way… this episode is for you.

"I refuse to build hope on the expectation of more suffering."

    There is another way.

  • Behind Closed Doors
    2026/07/20

What if the hardest parts of loving someone with addiction are the parts no one else ever sees?

From the outside, life can look completely normal. You're smiling at the neighbours, chatting at the supermarket, showing up for work… while inside you're carrying fear, shame, exhaustion and the constant weight of wondering whether today will be the day everything falls apart.

In this first episode of Journey Beyond the Chaos, Sandra shares her own story of living behind closed doors, and the quiet moment in her kitchen that became the beginning of a completely different way forward.

    In this episode you'll hear:

    • What it feels like to live behind closed doors while everything looks "normal"
    • Why shame and isolation become part of everyday life for so many families
    • How constant crisis quietly changes the person you become
    • The small question that marked the beginning of Sandra's own turning point
    • Why there really is another way forward

If this episode felt like someone was finally putting words to what you've been living… you're not alone. Every week, Journey Beyond the Chaos explores what it's really like to love an adult child through addiction — and how to stay connected without losing yourself in the process.
