Should mega church pastors use props in their sermons? In this video, we examine the controversy surrounding Josh Howerton’s ladder sermon and compare his approach with memorable sermon illustrations from Ed Young and Mike Todd. There is a major difference between using a visual illustration to communicate biblical truth and turning a church service into entertainment. We’ll look at where that line should be drawn, why Josh Howerton received so much criticism online, and whether his use of a ladder actually strengthened the biblical message he was preaching. We’ll also discuss Josh Howerton, Lakepointe Church, Paula White, the Word and Spirit movement, and the growing criticism facing prominent pastors and ministry leaders. Christians need discernment before immediately joining the latest social-media outrage. Are sermon props inherently wrong, or can they be effective when they serve Scripture rather than overshadow it? We’ll compare these examples and ask the bigger question: Has creativity helped communicate the Gospel—or has entertainment begun replacing biblical preaching and discipleship in the modern church?
