People think that they will be satisfied if they fill the hunger of the flesh and obtain what they want. But even after they are full, they hunger again, and even after the problem before their eyes is solved, the sin and fear deep in their hearts do not disappear. This is because there is a hunger and thirst of the soul that cannot be filled with the things of the world. Therefore, we must ask what the true food of life is, and in whom we must believe in order to obtain the remission of sins and eternal life.

The five loaves and two fish in John 6:1–15 is a sign in which Jesus had compassion on the hungry multitude and actually fed them. At the same time, it shows that Jesus is the bread of life, who gives the remission of sin and eternal life to souls dying because of sin.

John chapter 6 is the chapter that begins with the sign of the five loaves and two fish and makes clear that Jesus Christ is the bread of life. By feeding a great multitude to the full with five barley loaves and two fish, Jesus revealed that He is God, who does what is impossible by human calculation. Then, by walking on the sea and coming to His disciples, He also showed His authority to rule over nature.

Today we are going to look at the passage in which Jesus spoke about how it is right for a person who believes in Jesus to live, and about eternal life. In John chapter 6, when Jesus performed signs on the sick, many people followed Jesus, and Jesus went up on the mountain and sat there with His disciples. Jesus asked Philip where they should buy bread so that these people might eat, testing him as well, and finally He took one lunch, gave thanks, and showed the miracle in which about five thousand people ate bread and fish to the full and still twelve baskets were left over. When the people saw this, they followed Jesus and tried to make Him king. They were saying that it would be really good for them if they had such a king. But Jesus shook off their hands and went over to the other side of the sea.

Today we have read the word of John chapter 6. It is a word you know well. But first I will talk a little about the world. Modern scientists know that the solar system will break down, and they are investigating whether there is a universe like this outside this solar system. The solar system means the sun and all the planets around it, and all those planets are affected by the sun. I have no hobby of wanting to know such fields deeply, so I will tell you only what I have heard, but they say that the sun has aged a great deal. When it ages, it keeps getting hotter and gives off more heat, and if the sun, which until now has sent light and heat in just the right measure, sends heat that is too hot, they say all the surrounding planets will burn up and be destroyed. So the scientists, saying that the earth will be destroyed and the solar system will be destroyed, are exploring whether there is any way to survive.

For today’s message we have read the word of John chapter 6, as we did last time. Verse 41 says, “The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, ‘I am the bread which came down from heaven.’” When Jesus said that He is the bread which came down from heaven, the Jews, who were acting as the masters of the nation of Israel, began to complain about Jesus. Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know His parents, so how does He say that He is the bread which came down from heaven? The people of that time were dumbfounded. It was because the earthly father of Jesus was Joseph. Of course, Joseph was betrothed to Mary, and as we know, an angel came to Mary and told her that she would bear a son.

In John 7:1–9, Jesus was already in the state of having borne all the sins of the world in His own body with the baptism He received from John. Now, bearing that sin, He had to be judged on the Cross. Even while knowing that He would be put to death, Jesus was waiting for the time appointed by the Father and preaching the word of salvation.
