Newton married Mary Catlett, adopted two nieces, and began serious theological study while serving as a tide surveyor. Years of persistence led to his ordination in 1764, launching a ministry marked by compassion, powerful preaching, and deep influence on figures like William Wilberforce. Newton’s partnership with poet William Cowper produced Olney Hymns, including “Amazing Grace.” His later writings and advocacy helped fuel the movement to end the trade in human lives.
