John Alcala, Topeka’s legendary boxing coach and state legislator, just earned the rarest gold certification from USA Boxing — one of only 24 awarded annually — putting him squarely in the international coaching spotlight and opening doors to Olympic-level training. With 35 years of dedication behind him, including running a free youth boxing program at Three Shields Academy and mentoring future stars like Josiah Tibbs, Alcala’s journey is proof that grit, mentorship, and community can build champions. From working with boxing icons to shaping the next generation, his certification isn’t just a badge — it’s a milestone for Topeka, boxing, and every kid who walks through his doors.
